In 2008 the Special Olympics Eastern Region identified a need for an Athletics club in the D9 / D11 general area. Under the guidance of their Sports Officer, volunteers came together and attended the necessary training to enable them set-up a new club. North City Striders Special Olympics Club came into being in early 2009. On it’s first training session we had 2 athletes and 5 volunteers! Initially we gratefully used a hall in the Geraldstown House complex, we then had a short phase in Morton Stadium and Albert College Park before securing, the use of the current venue in St Kierans College. We use the Gym Hall all year round with forays out to the field behind, when weather allows. We now have 12-15 athletes, ranging in ages from 6 to 26, who regularly attend and a core group of 6 volunteers with 3 or 4 others who help out from time to time. The volunteers have all updated their skills in the areas of Athletics, Ethics and First Aid as the club progresses. Volunteers normally have a sponsored walk in Sept to aid club funds. We train athletes for Running, Shot Putt and Turbo Javelin and hope to add the Standing Long Jump and Long Jump events to our skills for next year. Our main aim at our training is to get everybody involved and active while having some fun. New volunteers are always welcome and new athlete enquiries can also be made by contacting Pól on 087-1262850 or drop us an e-mail at info@northcitystriders.ie. |
Recent News:Training will recommence on the 14th January 2012. North City Striders are looking for volunteers. Go on... you know you want to!
